Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) was a renowned Austrian symbolist painter and a prominent figure in the Vienna Secession movement. With a strong foundation in art, Klimt's exceptional painting skills were evident during his secondary school years. His journey into the world of oil paintings began at an art school in 1876, where he collaborated on murals and decorations for public buildings alongside Franz von Matsch and his brother. Displaying a historical flair, Klimt's early works were characterized by this style.
Painting Style
During the 1880s and 1890s, Klimt adorned Burgtheater and Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna with magnificent murals. Yet, a pivotal shift in style occurred when he undertook oil paintings for Vienna University. In a bold departure, he established the Secession movement in opposition to the traditional approach of Künstlerhaus. His embrace of symbolism marked a turning point. Post his departure from the Secession Movement in 1905, Klimt embraced a new direction. His focus turned to captivating nude portraits of women, portraying them in evocative and erotic poses that celebrated sensuality and love. Among his notable works, "The Kiss" exemplifies this period. Themes of life and death were also recurrent motifs within his oeuvre.
